Andreja Kulunčić: women.index / Conversation about work: feminist interventions

Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art, 14 Pariska street
May 31, 2013. at 6 P.M.

The political and economic and, in general, the social position of women in contemporary capitalism and, in a sense, the contemporary patriarchate, which is in the local context, on the one hand, degraded by the transitional inheritance of the war economy and on the other by the global financial crisis, constitute a point of departure for the understanding of various forms of the exploitation of women, as well as of the control of and violence against women. However, because this problem is not just an object of analysis but requires thinking about through material practice, it is needful to set off from the historical and material circumstances that women are a political category and that they are necessarily autonomous in their demands. Otherwise, these demands are invisible, marginalised, or in the best case only partially met in every new attempt at universal social and economic emancipation.

The issue of the social organisation of the work of women covers not only their presence on the labour market but also the reproduction of what was considered the natural state of affairs; the welfare of woman is included in the prosperity of man, so that bearing children, household and consuming activities are the primary tasks of women. The paid work of men, in the framework and dimensions of contemporary capitalism has retained its privileged status, which is borne out by the increasing feminisation of unemployment and poverty, more precisely, the feminisation of the service sector and low paid jobs, flexiwork and precarious work for women, the scrapping of women’s social rights and in this connection the quantification of their household, reproductive and other forms of unpaid work. The retraditionalisation of gender roles in the process of re/production of everyday life in the ever more pronounced class differences in the society of neoliberal capitalism contributes to these problems being settled today at the private and family and not the public and social levels.

Conversation about the current social and economic position of women was conducted on the basis of a number of propositions, not calling into question the lower paid and invisible or unpaid work of women, but starting off from that fact, and from the basic thesis that the work of women can be talked of only as a systemic problem, a social relationship through which women have to be politically subjectivised and together oppose the new forms of exploitation, violence and control produced by the so-called global economy of the neoliberal system networked with the local situation of the post-transitional patriarchate. There was discussion, then, of new feminist demands, not only those that related the raising of consciousness concerning gender roles and their models of representation, but also those that start off from political equality in the process of political and economic emancipation and the social reproduction of everyday life.

Moderator of the discussion: Jelena Petrović, Red Min(e)d.
