representation of different problematic and thematic wholes of the artistic
activity of Petar Dobrović (1890–1942) continues with an exhibition of his
drawings. Drawing occupies an extremely important place in Dobrović's body of
works, and the artist himself, a distinct colorist, emphasizes that drawing is
the bearer of an idea, while the color merely gives the mood. The most
voluminous whole in his body of drawings is constituted of the representations
of nudes, female and male, as sketches or studies, mostly created after a
model. The nude drawings developed in Paris between 1912 and 1914 stand out
with their characteristics as an example of the earliest dissolution of motif
in our parts, and represent a significant individual contribution to the
forming of early modernism in this environment. Dobrović is the first our
author who, by adopting Cézanne's research and cubistic experiences, applies in
his work the principles of analysis of space and form, and with this creates a
shift as compared to the dominant model. The group of drawings created between
1917 and 1924 reflects Dobrović's interests in mythological, allegorical,
Biblical and historical themes, in an endeavor to create “the monumental style
of the twentieth century“, as one of the artist's response to the Great War and
its consequences. The series of drawings with representations of private spaces
Dobrović builds like a sort of chronicle of modern civil life, which describes
his wife, son, members of extended family and friends, in everyday situations. With
the drawings of street scenes, and jobs done by laborers, farmers, fishermen,
masons, butchers, Dobrović observes, notices and records the characteristics of
social milieu. A series of drawings emerge in the cities in which Dobrović
stays, like Pécs, Florence, Prague, Hvar, Dubrovnik, or he draws landscapes
around those places. These are always seaside towns, with lots of vegetation,
in the summer period, and there are almost no urban wholes and large cities,
like Paris or Belgrade. In the landscape drawings we notice impulsivity,
briskness, emphasized gesture characteristic of Dobrović's painting, and the
affirmation of line resulted from quick, dynamic writing out on the surface of
paper. Dobrović's complex work, his body of painting and his extraordinary body
of drawings, determine the affiliation of this author with a broader circle of
European ideas and movements.
14.01.1890, Pécs (Austria-Hungary) – 27.01.1942, Bеlgrade (Yugoslavia)
1890: Petar Dobrović is born on January 14th in Pécs in the educated family of Serbian merchant Petar Dobrović. He studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest.
1911: Exhibits for the first time, in the National Salon in Budapest.
1912–1914: First stay in Paris. Adopts Cézanne's ideas and creates a series of drawings in which he approaches the cubistically perceived form. Returns to Pécs and stays in the art colony in Kecskemét.
1915–1918: Paints in Pécs and Budapest. Turns to renaissance models.
1918: Takes part in the rebellion of the Sixth Infantry Regiment in Pécs, where he is also arrested. During the capitulation of Austria-Hungary and the Hungarian Revolution of Béla Kun, manages to escape and arrive to Novi Sad.
1919–1926: Theoretically formulates the tendency towards the “monumental art of the twentieth century“.
1919: Participates at the Exhibition of a Group of Yugoslav Artists in Paris. Organizes the first independent exhibition in Yugoslavia.
1921: Stays in Florence. Influence of Michelangelo's sculptures. Return to Pécs. President of the short-lived (8 days) Baranya-Baja Republic. Sentenced to death in absentia. Settles in Belgrade.
1926–1930: Stays in Paris with interruptions. Writes art criticisms for the Pariser Deutsche Zeitung. Spends summer with Konjović at the French Riviera in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Travels to Mlini and Lopud. One of the founders of the group “Oblik”.
1931: Stay in Holland. Exhibits in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
1932: Exhibits in Prague with his brother, arch. Nikola Dobrović. Paints at sea, at Fruška gora.
1934: Collaborator of the magazine Danas in the editorial board of Miroslav Krleža and Milan Bogdanović. At the National University Kolarac starts and leads an evening course of figurative drawing.
1937: With Toma Rosandić, Milo Milunović and Sreten Stojanović, one of the founders and a professor at the Art Academy in Belgrade (today the Faculty of Fine Arts).
1938: Exhibits at the XXI Venice Biennale.
1940: Last stay on Hvar.
1941: After the bombing of Belgrade retires to Grocka.
1942: Dies in Belgrade on January 27th.
The Gallery of Petar Dobrović was opened on June 5th 1974; the founder of the gallery is the City of Belgrade. The Foundation Fund of the Gallery is constituted of the collection that the artist’s family (his wife Olga and his son Đorđe Dobrović) donated to the City of Belgrade. The first fund of the gallery is comprised of 124 original works of art of the author Petar Dobrović. Upon foundation, the City of Belgrade gave over the gallery to the professional care of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade. Today the Gallery depot also keeps the other works from the family ownership, which Đorđe Dobrović, the artist’s son, bequeathed to Belgrade, in 2002. Besides the works of art, the Gallery is also constituted of expansive documentation and the card index of the works of Petar Dobrović, which was, through decades, dedicatedly and expertly handled by the artist’s wife, Olga Dobrović. The Gallery of Petar Dobrović is a must place not only for observation and enjoyment, but also for systematic study of the body of works of Petar Dobrović (1890–1942), one of the main protagonists of Serbian modernism. We are talking about the main Dobrović’s works, numerous portraits of intellectuals, hedonist portraits en plein air, of women, friends, important and small people, self-portraits, landscapes from Dalmatia, vedutas of Venice and Dubrovnik, still-lifes. In the Gallery, thematic and problematic exhibitions take place that, from different aspects, present and analyze the layered and complex work of Petar Dobrović. In 1989, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade published a monograph of the first fund of the Gallery of Petar Dobrović.
