Curatorial Course What Could/Should Curating Do?

As part of the curatorial course "What Could/Should Curating Do" there will be a screening of the Slovenian documentary film "The Curator's Room - Igor Zabel: How to Make Art Visible" by director Damjan Kozole on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 6 p.m. at the Salon of the MoCAB. After the screening there will be a discussion with the film's screenwriter Urške Jurman, the art theorist Miško Šuvaković, art historian and curator Zoran Erić and curator Biljana Ćirić.
The Curator’s Room, a documentary film dedicated to Igor Zabel (1958–2005), art historian and curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ljubljana. In his work, Zabel made important contributions to the adequate historical positioning of artistic phenomena such as the historical avant-gardes (Tank!, 1998), neo-avant-gardes (OHO: Retrospective, 1994) and contemporary artistic practices. The film focuses on Zabel’s work in the field of fine arts from the end of the 1980s to his death in 2005.
The director Damjan Kozole points out that the film is on the one hand the story of Igor Zabel, while on the other hand it presents the story of a turning point in the understanding of art in times of social unrest:
“When Igor Zabel died in 2005, I was abroad. I opened my computer and saw a black-and-white photo of him on a portal. His sudden and unusual death resounded among everyone who works in art. This is not merely a film about Igor Zabel, but also a film about a period that brought essential shifts in the understanding and evaluation of art in the context of great social and political changes. In addition to the reflection on Zabel’s heritage, the film includes important documents that show how contemporary art was born and established in Slovenia and Eastern Europe.”
The documentary film explains Zabel's understanding of the curator’s role, his key exhibition projects, his interventions in Slovenian art history and his literary works and the texts. In his literary works, he contributed to the research of the relation between the (former) East and West as it manifested in art after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The film portrays not only the man who, despite the internal contradictions in the art world, persistently believed in the power of art, but also the time and the artistic surrounding in which Igor Zabel worked and which he helped shape. His interest in researching the complex relations between the social and the artistic was also the basis of Individual Systems, an exhibition he prepared for the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), which inaugurated him as a referential international curator.
About the speakers:
Urška Jurman, the film's screenwriter works as an editor, curator and writer in the field of contemporary art. Since 2012 she has been working as a programme manager of Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory.
Miodrag Miško Šuvaković is a professor of applied aesthetics & theory of art and media at the Faculty for Media and Communications in Belgrade. He is member of Slovenian Society of Aesthetics and Society for Aesthetics of Architecture and Visual Arts Serbia, and the president of the International Association for Aesthetics (IAA).
Zoran Erić is an art historian, curator, lecturer and Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
Biljana Ćirić is an independent curator, organizer and founder of the international curatorial course "What Could Should/Curating Do" that is held in Belgrade for the second consecutive year.
