Through history and in the present moment, the expressive nature of stone has been a challenge for artists. The Silence of Stone exhibition presents 33 sculptures in stone from the sculpture collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, primarily focusing on emphasising the possibilites of artistic expression in stone. The exhibition also aims to present the most important works in modern and contemporary art instigated as a result of working with (shaping) stone, and to expose the ‘being’ of stone, its atemporality and concurrent contemporaneity as material in sculpture. 

The idea is communicated throu three segments: the first, titled Soil / Stone / Ground shows stone as a possiblity to shape the ground; the second, Body / Man / Two highlights the essential nature of stone – being lapidary and compact; whilst the third, titled Face / Personality / Character offers possible insight into the presentation of man in three ways, through likeness, character or personality type – in the material of stone. 

Primordial matter – stone.Condensation of time / space / matter. 

The idea of the “silence of stone” indicates an important property of stone in comparison with the speach of bronze, the elaboratnes of wood, the shapelesness of soil. Because of the eloquence of its dispearessed shapes, bronze does not own the inner peace of stone. Far to elaborate, impetuous and corruptible; it is impossible to work the surface of wood to the extent which would allow reduction to its essence. The inconsistency of clay, that is, the breakability of baked soil; the vivid colours which afford it a dimension pertaining to the senses and earthly decay, makes it a matter which does not allow the artist to reach an expressive state of eternity; something that is present in the endurance, immutability and durability of stone. 

Through inner profound workings and secrecy, stone speaks with the “eloquence” of silence. 

Subdued, mystery, atemporality. Compendious, whole, unified. Stone does not tolerate extreme motion that does not concur with its weight. It demands compactness, “summoning” specifically these traits. The compendious nature of stone allows the contemporary artist just like the artist of pre-history, discovers invisible forces; discloses the energy of stone; reveals the spirit of rock deposited over the course of millennia; invisible forces are given tangible form. 

Stone, just like art, despite all tendencies that proclaim “the end of art”, the era of new materials and abandoning the use of traditional materials, inviolably endures and remains (for) ever a testimony of the longing of the human being to leave a trace – in space, in time. 

Not solely the artistic process of shaping and interpreting sculpture, but also the patient and dedicated observation of stone safeguards the human being from the “fatal indifference” (Baudrillard) of current times, because stone, with its primordial simplicity, opulent and unexpected structure, texture and colouration, always, repeatedly allows discovery of the unknown. 

The exhibition presents some of the works of leading Serbian sculptors of the 20th century, as well as sculptures from former Yugoslav republics, such as: Dušan Jovanović Đukin, Sreten Stojanović, Risto Stijović, Vojin Bakić, Olga Jančić, Vida Jocić, Jovan Kratohvil, Đorđije Crnčević, Aleksandar Zarin, Milun Vidić, Momčilo Krković, Angelina Gatalica, Radivoj Subotički, Nandor Glid, Jelena Jovanović, Nebojša Mitrić, Kolјa Milunović, Milica Ribnikar, Miodrag Damnjanović, Sava Sandić, Frano Kršinić, Lojze Dolinar and Pavle Pavao Perić.

A conference About Stone will be organised on 1 March 2017 as part of the exhibition. The conference will gather experts from different fields, primarily history and art history, visual and applied arts, as well as archaeology, geology, petrology, geomorphology, conservation and ethnology. Participants will focus on the value of stone in nature, everyday life and art, and about its crucial role in human existence since the stoneage to the present.
